MPC - model-based predictive control is a widely used and accepted method of multi-variable control. It is in many respects perfect for cement and general mineral process control
Hybrid MPC is the smart mix of MPC with other technologies such as expert systems (ES). We mix both to get the advantage of each technology.
MPC Versus Expert Sytems
One of the biggest problems with advanced technology is that the algorithms and signal flow get horribly complicated, and become embedded and hidden from the user. Our philosophy is to expose the algorithms used to make it easy to understand and improve.
We apply the most simple to the most sophisticated signal processing to our solutions. We like to start off simple and only resort to complex solutions if it adds value and it needs to solve the problem.
The whole debate can very simply be solved by stating we use both or any combination of strategies that make sense and work.
As our objective to deploy control for a reason, we often question why a client wants to control in the first place. The application of APC is never the objective.
Hence we often recommend when no advanced control is required or does make sense, don't deploy APC, or use a PID. If available, use the functionality available of the PLC or DCS.
